Next up is Bo Burnham. A geeky kid sitting at a keyboard in his bedroom coming up with hysterically crude yet clever songs and raps. ("How'd I come to master all these things? Like a tampon thief, I had to pull some strings.")

These kids did one of the best short movies I have ever seen in this style.
What strikes me as most impressive is (with the prerequisite talent and imagination) how easily and cheaply a person can reproduce a reasonable simulacrum of Hollywood in their home now: Visual and sound effects, editing, soundtrack, graphics... all of it is available with the average home video editing software... or at least on commercially-available software that anybody can own and take the time to utilize.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Hollywood spends tens of millions on some movies....and some kids can come up with this for a few bucks, a computer, and some talent. Here is another one you should watch, although this was from a small production company, but still done with a shoe string budget.

But Hollywood would never make anything original. To much risk in that. It is far easier to make a formula driven movie with a few "stars" acting in it. they know that will make money. Making something original is a risk they will not take. Many good movies out there now are from independent companies willing to take risks.
I blame the movie "Waterworld" for this. One of the most horrible movies every made...but when you add the domestic, foreign ticket purchases, DVD and TV/pay channel fees not only did this movie recoup the huge costs but it actually made a profit. Which proved to the Hollywood executives that if they stick with their movie making formula...they will never lose.
