The Most Unlikely Internet Celebrity

MRirian is a cute girl. So cute that she has become a YouTube superstar by simply putting up videos of herself staring at her webcam. You doubt? Her videos combined have over 30 million hits. To quote two of my favorite muppets: "How many hits did this video receive? Unfortunately not enough to kill it."

She's half American and half Japanese from Pennsylvania, but speaks enough Japanese (occasional cutesy sera-fuku phrases put at the beginning and end of her 30-second videos) to have made her a gargantuan celebrity in the world's oddest country.

First, after watching some of the other vids of her....I like it better when she does not say anything. What is up with her voice?

Second, does she realize why her vids are so popular? I wonder if she knows what guys are doing when they watch her vids? Hmmmmm?

(a) Her voice is an affectation typical of Japanese teenage girls: Every girl (and I mean every girl) on every Japanese cartoon sounds exactly the same way. Japanese culture has become so fixated on "youth" that it has crossed over into quasi-infantile behavior, especially among teenage girls.

(b) Yes... she knows exactly what her videos are about. It's the ultimate Japanese soft-core kiddie porn: Cute-and-young-looking girls going doe-eyed in front of the camera, or just giggling and playing with their hair, or sucking on a lollipop or hugging a teddy bear... sometimes in bikinis or school uniforms or lingerie. (Do a YouTube search for "AV girl", and you'll see what I mean.)

A personal favorite which is totally typical of the genre. ;)

Looked through Youtube....I really do not think I will ever understand the Japanese. Interesting thing is I married a Japanese woman (then divorced her...lol).

But after seeing this stuff...I am glad I have a son.
