Annoying

One of the things that is becoming a new annoyance to living in The Philippines is that more and more stuff on the internet is being blocked by location. I tried to watch The Dan Band's clip on Leno the other night: Nope. Not any more.

Hulu has been that way for a while...

And no: Proxy servers do not work.

I'm assuming this is because broadcasting television content over the internet is going against some law (either new or previously unenforced) about licensing or something.

Sucks.

Anon,

Thanks for the link. It's nice to know that I can get the stuff if I really need it. However, the 400 MB downloads, the RAR files, et cetera... it just doesn't compare to hitting the "play" button on a video player, and instantly enjoying what it is you want to see.

Jil you need to use a VPN from in America, find a good one it will cost you a little but make sure the connection is fast. You can then watch CBS and anything else you want to as your IP address is American.

There are some free VPN providers to try like Alon Web, Ultravpn but they are slow.

I use StrongVPN http://www.strongvpn.com/ and have a 3 city special and can watch TV in America and UK through network websites.

Have had no real problems and is pretty quick most of the time.

That is an option for you Jil

My work computer has VPN on it to get a secure connection to headquarters, but I don't think Internet Explorer goes through it. I couldn't use a VPN on my work computer then, which is where I do about 90% of my internet surfing: I certainly couldn't go mucking about with the settings my company has for me. Remember, this computer is very locked down. Also, that VPN costs 1500 pisos per year. An option, but not a free option.

Hi jill,
I'm Manila visiting from LA. I had your problem too but found this website which offers a free VPN and works like a charm. I watch Netflix a lot and I had the same problem. You must have Admin right on your PC to be able to install this software.

Good Luck!

PS: I've been in philippines for about 6 months and going to Thailand end of december. Thailand is much better (and cheaper) for living.

I use hotspot shield and it allows use of the streaming music websites that are normaly blocked from non-usa computers.
It is free and you are able to turn it on and off using a control icon in the system tray.

I see the usd is down to 32.5baht (and scheduled to drop even more) how is it holding up against the piso?

It has dropped to the high 46 level last I looked.
