Grammar Test

http://www.grammarbook.com/grammar_quiz/grammar_pretest.asp

Here is a pretty quick 50-question grammar test. I managed to get 40 right. Take it and see how you do... and put your results in the comments.

  2. Dago... That's not too bad really. I know TheMindFantastic personally, and he is a grade-A writer. My father took the test and got 36/50 too, and he's a huge grammar stickler. My mother is a former reading teacher and got 41/50. My sister who is just an annoying genius got 44/50, so we won't count her.

I study grammar as part of my job (which is where I actually got the link from) and as a hobby.

It's a tough test with a bunch of little known special rules and instances of counterintuitiveness that are designed to trip you up.

  4. Not bad at all M.

So far, the highest score is 45/50 from my sister's husband, Dan. So Dan and Nancy have the two highest scores, which means that little Vinnie is probably going to grow up to be the next Einstein... or at least a grammatical Einstein.

  6. Fortunately, they aren't too big on punctuation in the 'hood, unless it involves punctuating you in the head with a baseball bat.

But hey... in 50 years, solecisms, ebonics, and other crass neologisms will probably be taught in schools, and newspaper columns and novels wll l00k lyk a F1Lup1no txt msg.

  7. I sent the quiz to my sister who manages people who edit books for a large software company. She got 49/50 correct. I guess they do learn something in those expensive Ivy League skools!

    Yikes. I'm an editor too.
Time to read my Strunk and White manual again.

  9. 42/50

Very interesting Jil, and fun as well. I am currently an English Ed. major so I thought I might have this test pegged - wrong. Still, 42 is respectable. A quick reminder that there will always be more to learn.
Great blog; I enjoy it very much from Bath. A captivating, vicarious travel experience. Very nice indeed.

  10. M, My old high school Latin teacher got 49 out of 50 as well, and insists that one of the questions is incorrect according to "SAT Standards". Your sister probably missed the same one as well.

This test has done the rounds through my extended family and the winner, susprisingly enough, is my mother's cousin, my Aunt Alice, who is a retired school nurse, who scored 46 out of 50.

  11. 42/50

I was disappointed as I thought I was better at English than the score indicated.

    Is that a good score?
